A Glimmer in the Flats
In Singapore, some low-income families have lived for generations in older public-housing flats. Parents often hold several jobs, work rotating shifts, and struggle to give their children enough company and guidance in their studies.
To change this situation, the Foundation launched the Glimmer Project, recruiting knowledgeable, patient, warm-hearted volunteers to provide long-term, stable, free after-school tutoring for children of the housing estates.
Every weekend, volunteers arrive at the community center and tutor children in mathematics, English, mother tongue, and other subjects, patiently answering accumulated questions. Beyond tutoring, they chat heart-to-heart, sharing experiences from study and growth.
One primary-school student who had ranked at the bottom of the class gradually rediscovered interest and rhythm in learning through half a year of patient one-on-one companionship. His grades climbed steadily, and his confidence returned.
To date, the Glimmer Project has helped more than sixty children, with new volunteers continually joining. Little glimmers, gathered together, light up the children's once-dim road ahead.
